In light of the recent Sony Playstation 3 release, long queues many days prior to its release date was a common sight, especially in Japan and it was a socially accepted act. Such queues also sprang up in the US. However, in one such incident, Best Buy decided to evict people who had camped up to 4 days prior to the release.
I think this shows an interesting culture divide between how the West and East Asia view “kiasu-ism” (see here for the meaning of kiasu). In Singapore, and generally most parts of Asia, it is in the spirit of “kiasu-ism” that people queue hours, if not days, ahead of a scheduled store discount or give away. It is not only limited to people a certain social class or age, but a practice shared by both the rich and poor, young and old alike.
Dear Derrick, since weijun has completed his Alevel’s he’s been looking for a new game! DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING COOL TO RECOMMEND?
wow. i make you sound like some frigging online doctor! soso? any game to recommend? =)
Although this is hardly the right post for that question, I would Company of Heroes, a WW2 RTS with beautiful graphics and great physics, since he’s a huge fan of war games just like I am.
Defcon is also a great game, but I’m not sure if it would appeal to him, or the mainstream gamers for that matter, as it is more catered for a niche group of people, especially those who love Tom Clancy books and are US-Soviet nuclear war fanatics :P
